A VERY RARE first edition of a rare title! The second edition came in 1874, the same year as the first and was the last edition that was published in the deluxe large format. H28 cm, W 22 cm. 189 pages, engraved fronstp and 24 illustrative plates, actual woodbury prints pasted into the book, of lunar objects, phenomena and scenery, together with numerous woodcuts.

Bound in a blindstamped darkblue clothbinding with gilt motive of lunar crater on cover. Some foxing, very minor, in book, none on plates. Binding in good condition, some wear on top and bottom spine.

The author spents years observing differnt craters and then made models from their observations, they then placed these under artificial lightning and took the photographs that appears in the book.
